High Speed Scanning

Your Computer Can Read Your Books to You

High Speed ScanningMICROCOMPUTER Science Centre offers a service that converts printed material into a digital format that a computer can “read” out loud.

The Service:
• Drop off or mail a book, or other document, along with a copy of the proof of purchase for the book and a signed letter indicating that the copy is being created for a person designated as special needs. It is illegal to duplicate this CD and a copy of this CD must not be made.
• We will scan the document using a high-speed scanner and convert it into readable text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology.
• Document files are prepared by chapter and will be available in Kurzweil/Wynn Format. With the document in this format, all of Kurzweil 3000/Wynn’s reading and study features are accessible, including text magnification, highlighting, voice and text note taking, an on-line dictionary, multiple reading voices, and extensive customization. On screen, the user is presented with a black and white image of each page, complete with tables, graphs, photos, etc.
• Files are placed on a CD and shipped back to you. You will require Kurzweil/Wynn software to read these files.
• Editing, spell checking & zone editing of the document can be provided upon a request. Please call in for our special pricing!
Legal aspects in Canada

The law in Canada states that a user with special needs is eligible to have the book that he/she purchased converted to an alternative format.

If all the three conditions are met:
1. The user must own a purchased copy of the book
2. The user must have special needs in order to be qualified for an alternative format
3. The user shall not duplicate the digital alternative format copy.
